The following ideas are scenarios that can take place in any school. If you would like to comment on the scenario or add another that can be uploaded later please do so on the chat link below!
Elementary School
A few months into the school year, you notice that one of your students, Sadie, is being picked on because of her weight. Students pick "down" times, like bathroom breaks and lunch time to insult and humiliate her. You've spoken to her personally and she is afraid that any interference from a teacher may escalate the situation. She's asked you to not speak to the students who are bullying her directly.:
1. Have you had any experience like this in your class? (please discuss below if you have)
2. What is the best approach that will create a closer class?
Team9440 Recommends: Think about reserving 10-15 minutes once a week to exploring team building games centered around identity like, "Similar and Different". Give it a try and report back letting us know how this approach is working!
Middle School
Juan had a heated argument in class recently with one of his classmates. His explosion was over recent posts he has seen on his Facebook account. Apparently a group of classmates have been cyber bullying Juan. He has tried to keep it to himself but now it has manifested into a verbal explosion. Juan's classmates swears that they were not cyber bullying and only having fun with Juan. The class eventually clams down but the issue is still not resolved and could possibly continue:
1. How would you react and attempt to problem solve if you were the teacher of this class?
2. Have you had any experience like this in your class? (please discuss below if you have)
3. What is the best approach that will create a closer class?
Team9440 Recommends:
Assign one more of the writing prompts from The Bully Proof Classroom's"Great Anti-Bullying Activities and Lesson Plans" during in-class journal time or as homework. Share in class focusing on how student responses can foster self acceptance. Give it a try and report back letting us know how this approach is working!
High School
Jessica walks into her 5th hour class and a group of three girls start whispering with each other and laughing. Jessica knows they are talking about her. One of the girls has knocked Jessica's pens off her desk as she has walked past Jessica, and her bag has been written on by one of the girls during class. The torment happens daily.
1. Why do you think the girls would choose to treat Jessica with such disreguard?
2. Have you had any experience like this in your class? (please discuss below if you have)
3. What should be done to create a better community in this class?
Team9440 Recommends: Create a blog or wiki where you can have your students work in strategic groups to create and post videos, poems, stories, or a comic to share how they feel about bullying and ideas of how they could work to prevent bullying. Give it a try and report back letting us know how this approach is working!
